Beatification

Church Names Theresa Gerhardinger “Blessed." The hierarchical church acknowledges extraordinary goodness in one woman.

Sister Mary Margaret Johanning
S. Mary Margaret Johanning, SSND, served as General Superior from 1977-1987. Her love for the congregation and her enthusiasm for religious renewal were among some of her greatest gifts to the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

On November 17, 1985, Mother Theresa Gerhardinger was named “Blessed” by Pope John Paul II. At the time of the beatification, Sister Mary Margaret Johanning, SSND General Superior, described the holiness and compassion that has endeared Mother Theresa to many people.

With the beatification came the privilege of celebrating a liturgy created with Mother Theresa’s life and ministry in mind. A copy of this liturgy for May 9th is available as well as a list of significant feast days of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

The actual ceremony of beatification was held at St. Peter’s in Rome as seen in video below.

Sister Annemarie Bernhard, a School Sister of Notre Dame from Bavaria, composed a hymn for the beatification. This “round” in four sections is taken from Mother Theresa’s letter #714, written in 1847. “Let us continue to serve the Triune God all our lives with joy, to obey him, to love him above all.”
